In aviation maintenance and operations, an approach is the phase of flight that begins when an aircraft is cleared to descend from cruise altitude toward a specific runway, and ends when the aircraft is lined up for final descent or touchdown. It is a precisely defined airspace corridor managed by air traffic control, with specific altitude restrictions, headings, and speed limits that vary by airport, runway, and weather conditions.

The approach is broken into segments. The initial approach brings the aircraft from cruise down to an intermediate altitude, typically controlled by radar vectors from ATC. The intermediate approach narrows the descent and aligns the aircraft with the runway centerline. The final approach is the last few miles of descent, where the pilot or autopilot locks onto the runway using visual cues or instrument guidance systems such as Instrument Landing System (ILS) localizer and glideslope signals. Each segment has distinct speed and configuration requirements; flaps, landing gear, and other devices are deployed in sequence during approach.

Maintenance technicians must understand approach procedures because aircraft systems are stressed differently during this phase than in cruise or climb. The landing gear extends and retracts, hydraulic systems work harder, engines operate at higher power settings than descent but lower than cruise, and flight control surfaces move through their full range. Approach failures, particularly in the landing gear, brakes, and engine bleed air systems, are common write-ups that ground aircraft.

The term approach also names the ground infrastructure and procedures that enable safe descent: approach charts, approach plates, approach lighting systems, and approach control facilities. An approach chart shows the specific descent paths, waypoints, altitude restrictions, and radio frequencies used for that particular runway. These are critical documents for both flight crews and maintenance planning, since they define the performance envelope in which the aircraft must operate safely.

A stabilized approach is a maintenance and safety concept: the aircraft should reach a stable configuration and descent rate by a fixed altitude, typically 500 feet above ground level on final approach. Unstabilized approaches, in which the aircraft is still changing speed, configuration, or descent rate, indicate pilot error, weather complications, or mechanical issues, and are often aborted and retried. From a maintenance perspective, repeated unstabilized approaches or go-arounds stress engines, hydraulics, and structures more severely than normal approaches, and should be noted in maintenance records.
