A flashing located at the juncture of the top of a sloped roof and a vertical wall, chimney or steeper-sloped roof.

Apron flashing is a sheet metal component installed where a sloped roof meets a vertical obstruction, such as a chimney, parapet wall, or the upslope side of a steeper roof. It channels water that would otherwise pool at this vulnerable junction down the slope and into the roof gutters or away from the wall surface. The flashing typically covers the top edge of the lower roof and extends partway up the vertical surface, creating a continuous barrier against water infiltration.

The shape of apron flashing is defined by its location on the roof. The lower edge sits on the roof sheathing and under the shingles or roofing material, while the upper edge bends upward and sits against or behind the vertical surface. On masonry chimneys, the flashing may tuck into a mortar joint; on frame walls, it is typically fastened to sheathing and covered by exterior cladding. Copper, galvanized steel, and aluminum are common materials, chosen for durability and weather resistance over the 20 to 40 year life of the roof system.

Installation failures are the primary source of leaks at these junctions. Improper overlap with underlayment, inadequate fastening, and gaps where the flashing meets the vertical surface all allow water to run behind the flashing and into the building envelope. Expansion and contraction due to temperature cycles can open these gaps if the flashing is rigidly fastened without allowing for movement. Ice dams also pose a risk: water backed up by ice can find its way under flashing that lacks adequate clearance from the roof surface.

Apron vs. step flashing

Apron flashing differs from step flashing, which handles the sides of obstructions like chimneys. Step flashing runs perpendicular to the roof slope, installed one section per shingle course, and allows the roof covering to overlap each step. Apron flashing runs the full width of the obstruction at the top and does not interleave with roofing shingles in the same way. For a chimney, both types are typically used: apron at the front (upslope) side and step flashing on the two sides.

The term "apron" describes its function: like an apron worn to protect clothing, this metal shield protects the roof structure beneath it. It is sometimes also called "head flashing" or "front flashing," though these terms are less standard. Proper slope (minimum 3:12 pitch) and adequate overhang into gutters or onto lower roofing are essential to reliable performance. A well-installed apron flashing is invisible once the roof and wall coverings are complete, but its absence or failure becomes immediately apparent during the first heavy rain.
