apron: the hard-standing where planes sit and move

An apron is the reinforced concrete or asphalt surface at an airport where aircraft are parked, serviced, refueled, loaded, and positioned for takeoff. It is distinct from the runway and taxiway, though aircraft cross aprons to reach those surfaces. The apron bears concentrated loads from multiple aircraft at once and must support heavy ground support equipment: tug tractors, catering trucks, fuel bowsers, and maintenance platforms that can weigh 30 to 100 tons.

Aprons are typically designed to 400 pound per square inch bearing capacity for aircraft landing gear, with subgrade preparation that includes compacted fill, drainage layers, and often reinforced concrete slabs 12 to 16 inches thick. The surface is painted with grid lines to guide aircraft taxi routes and stand numbers to assign parking positions. Jurisdictional aprons differ: cargo aprons near freight hangars have fewer but larger stands; passenger aprons near terminals have dense, closely-spaced gate positions.

Aprons connect directly to taxiways at designated holding points and extend outward to aircraft parking stands or hardstands. Each stand has a marked-out rectangle with painted centerlines, nose guide lines, and sometimes fixed or towbar guidance systems. A single large passenger apron can cover 40 to 60 acres, with designated zones for active aircraft movement, servicing areas where engines run for maintenance, and remote parking for aircraft in long-term storage.

Apron surfaces degrade from jet blast erosion, hydraulic fluid spills, hot wheel brakes, and weather exposure. Maintenance includes regular seal-coating, pothole patching, and line repainting. Foreign object damage (FOD) prevention is critical; dropped fasteners, debris, and gravel can enter engines or damage undercarriage, so aprons are swept, blown, and inspected routinely. Contamination from fuel spills or deicing fluid requires containment berms and recovery systems.

The term apron is retained in aviation English despite regional variants; some older sources use ramp in North America. In British and international usage, apron remains standard. The word's origin is uncertain but may derive from the protective sheet laid beneath workbenches. In airport planning, aprons are grouped into operational zones: gate aprons, transit aprons for short-term parking, and remote aprons for overnight or maintenance parking, each with different traffic flow and utility infrastructure.
