attoparsec: a joke unit that's exactly 3.085 cm

An attoparsec is a legitimate SI-prefixed unit of length equal to 10-18 parsecs, which works out to approximately 3.085 centimetres or 1.215 inches. It exists because the parsec itself, a unit used in astronomy to measure stellar distances, can be subdivided using standard metric prefixes. The prefix atto denotes one quintillionth (10-18), making this the smallest practical subdivision of the parsec.

The attoparsec has no serious application in dimensional metrology or industrial inspection. It originated as an inside joke among physicists and engineers who recognised that while the parsec is defined with extreme precision (exactly 648,000 / pi astronomical units), applying the atto prefix yields a length almost perfectly coinciding with the inch. The measurement sits at 30.857 millimetres, close enough to 31 millimetres that it has occasionally appeared in academic humour and casual reference materials.

Why it matters to metrologists

Metrologists encounter the attoparsec not as a working unit but as a test of dimensional literacy and as a reminder of how arbitrary unit systems can be. It demonstrates that SI prefixes, while systematic, can produce absurd results when applied to astronomically-derived units. The unit also serves as a historical artifact of scientific culture, appearing in physics folklore and occasionally in standards documentation as a cautionary example of prefix misapplication.

In practical inspection work, the attoparsec is worthless; its only value is pedagogical. It shows why dimensional analysis must be grounded in physical sense, not merely in mathematical consistency. An inspector working in conventional units, millimetres, inches, microns, will never encounter a specification or tolerance quoted in attoparsecs, yet the unit's existence underscores the importance of understanding the relationship between different measurement systems and the dangers of arbitrary prefix stacking.
