The millilitre (ml) is a metric unit of volume equal to one thousandth of a litre, or 10-3 L. It occupies the same physical space as one cubic centimetre (1 cm3 or 1 cc), which is why the two terms are used interchangeably in practice, though ml is the proper SI symbol. In everyday industrial and laboratory work, ml is the standard unit for measuring liquids, suspensions, and reagents in volumes between roughly 1 ml and 1000 ml.
Measurement of ml quantities relies on graduated glassware: cylinders, pipettes, burettes, and volumetric flasks are calibrated to deliver or contain precise ml volumes. A 10 ml graduated cylinder typically has graduations every 1 ml; a 100 ml cylinder every 2 ml. Accuracy depends on the glass class: Class A volumetric glassware meets tighter tolerances than Class B. A 1000 ml volumetric flask, for instance, has a tolerance of plus or minus 0.40 ml under Class A standards. Pipettes are calibrated as either "to deliver" (TD) or "to contain" (TC), a distinction that matters when accounting for residual fluid clinging to the inside walls.
Where ml sits in measurement
The millilitre bridges laboratory and industrial scales. Chemists dose reagents in ml; pharmaceutical manufacturers measure active ingredients in ml; food and beverage producers specify additives in ml per unit batch. In quality control, ml measurements appear in ISO methods, ASTM standards, and regulatory filings. Below 1 ml, workers typically switch to microlitre units (µl or micromL). Above 1000 ml, litres become more practical; industrial tanks are specified in litres or cubic metres.
Common errors in ml work include parallax error when reading a meniscus (the curved surface of a liquid in a narrow container), temperature drift affecting volume (liquids expand and contract with heat), and contamination of graduated vessels. A 10 ml pipette filled at 20°C will contain slightly less at 25°C. Graduated cylinders are acceptable for rough measurement but unsuitable for analytical work; volumetric flasks and burettes are required when tolerance matters.
The symbol ml, sometimes written mL in English-speaking countries, is now preferred over the older abbreviations cc and mL. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) recommends ml without a full stop. In documentation and labels, ml should always include the numeric value directly before it with a space: "50 ml" not "50ml". When ml appears in density statements, it denotes volume per unit mass, as in "g/ml" for grams per millilitre.
