A ronnasecond is 10²⁷ seconds, or roughly 3.17 × 10¹⁹ years. It belongs to the SI metric prefixes adopted in 2022, where "ronna" denotes the multiplier 10²⁷. The symbol is Rs. This unit has no practical application in any measurable physical process, calibration, or industrial timeline. It exists because SI metrologists systematized the full prefix set to cover the mathematical space between the largest and smallest scales, not because anyone measures anything in ronnaseconds.
The SI prefix hierarchy expanded in November 2022 to include ronna (10²⁷), quetta (10³⁰), and their reciprocals ronto (10⁻²⁷) and quecto (10⁻³⁰). This closed a symmetrical gap in the standard. Before 2022, yotta (10²⁴) was the largest prefix; ronna and quetta now sit above it. The names derive from whimsical sources: ronna from a Norwegian Norse term, quetta from a conversation among the metrology committee. In metrology and inspection work, the ronnasecond is irrelevant. The unit appears in theoretical physics (speculative models of proton decay, universe heat death, or Poincaré recurrence times), philosophy, cosmology, and deliberate humor. Some metrology references list it for completeness, the way a dictionary includes obsolete words.
The real utility of ronna is educational and systemic. Metrologists maintain SI as a coherent whole. By standardizing the prefix set at both extremes, they prevent ad-hoc naming schemes, ensure future compatibility, and make the metric system mathematically complete. A calibration standard, a physics textbook, or an industrial reference may cite the ronnasecond simply to show that SI covers this exponent, even if no device or process ever measures in it.
For practitioners in metrology and inspection, the ronnasecond is a footnote. Know it exists; understand that it is a legitimate SI unit; recognize that if someone writes "Rs" in a physics paper, they mean 10²⁷ seconds. But do not expect to calibrate against it, measure with it, or see it in a measurement uncertainty budget. It is order in the standard, not a tool.
