Autocide is a biological control method in which sterile males of a pest species are bred in large numbers and released into the wild to mate with females, producing no viable offspring. The technique reduces or eliminates pest populations without chemical pesticides or genetic modification of the wild population. Male insects are typically sterilized through gamma radiation or X-rays before release, rendering them unable to father offspring while leaving them capable of normal courtship and mating behavior.

The method works best against insects with relatively short generation times and where males can be reliably separated from females at the pupal stage. Screwworms, fruit flies, and certain mosquitoes are primary targets. Success depends on releasing sterile males at a ratio high enough to saturate the female population, typically 10:1 or higher, across multiple generations. Each generation contains fewer wild-born offspring, eventually collapsing the population below the threshold needed for economic or health damage.

Practical constraints and economics

Rearing millions of insects to adulthood demands specialized facilities with precise temperature and humidity control. The operation requires consistent funding across multiple seasons, since a single missed generation can allow wild populations to rebound. Sterile insect technique (SIT) programs are therefore typically government-run or coordinated across regions, with costs proportional to the area treated. A single release cycle may cost thousands of dollars per square mile.

The method has achieved elimination or near-elimination of screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) from much of North America and parts of Central America, one of agriculture's clearest biological control successes. Fruit fly programs in California and other regions have similarly contained or suppressed infestations. Failures occur when sterile males perform poorly in the field, when wild populations are too large, or when geographic barriers allow reinfestation from untreated areas.

The term combines Greek autos (self) and Latin caedere (to kill): the pest population essentially destroys itself. In research and regulatory contexts, the method is often called sterile insect technique (SIT). It represents a fundamentally different approach from conventional pest management, trading the immediate knockdown of chemicals for long-term population suppression that preserves natural enemies and requires no residues on crops.
