A smoke blower is a handheld device that produces cool, thick smoke to quiet honeybees during hive inspection and harvesting. It consists of a small combustion chamber, usually cylindrical and made of steel, with a hinged or sliding grate at the bottom to hold burning fuel, and a large accordion-style bellows attached to the chamber's side. When the beekeeper operates the bellows, air is forced through the burning fuel and then out through a nozzle or spout toward the hive entrance. The smoke masks the alarm pheromones that bees release when threatened, making them less aggressive and easier to manage.

The standard commercial smoke blower holds fuel in a chamber roughly 3 to 4 inches in diameter and 5 to 7 inches tall. Beekeepers typically use dry plant material as fuel: pine needles, wood chips, cardboard, straw, or burlap. The fuel must burn slowly and produce abundant cool smoke rather than flame. Hardwoods like oak ignite less reliably than softer materials, so practitioners favor cedar shavings, dried grass, or specially prepared bee-keeping fuel pellets. The bellows usually has a capacity of 300 to 500 cubic centimeters and is worked by hand with a squeeze-and-release rhythm that maintains a steady smoke stream.

Effective smoke blowing requires timing and restraint. A beekeeper lights the fuel, allows it to smolder, then squeezes the bellows a few times before opening the hive. Too much smoke irritates bees; too little leaves them unquiet. The smoke cools as it travels, so the output is warm rather than hot, reducing injury to the bees' bodies. The device's design has remained nearly unchanged for over a century because the principle is simple and effective. Minor variations exist in bellows style (some use a leather or rubber diaphragm instead of an accordion) and chamber shape, but all serve the same function.

Common failures occur when the grate clogs with ash, restricting airflow, or when the bellows develops leaks in the leather or rubber. Rusted chambers lose their seal, allowing smoke to escape sideways rather than through the nozzle. The nozzle itself can narrow if creosote builds up inside from repeated use. Maintenance requires periodic cleaning of ash, inspection of gaskets, and occasional application of animal fat or beeswax to leather components to prevent cracking.

The smoke blower occupies a specific niche in beekeeping that no substitute fully replaces. A veil and gloves protect the beekeeper from stings, but the smoke blower protects both the beekeeper and the bees by reducing aggression at the source. Modern alternatives, such as water spray or chemical pacifiers, are sometimes used, but the smoke blower remains standard equipment in both commercial apiaries and hobbyist operations because it is cheap, reliable, and leaves no chemical residue on honey or equipment.
