A person employed to superintend the pit during the "back" or afternoon shift, in the absence of the overman.

In colliery operations, the back-overman held formal charge of the pit during the afternoon or evening shift, deputizing for the overman during hours when the senior manager was not present. This was a critical role in underground coal mines where production ran across multiple shifts and the chain of command had to remain unbroken from pit bottom to surface. The back-overman typically had charge of face workers, haulage crews, and safety compliance when the main overman had gone off site.
The position emerged in larger, deeper mines where a single overman could not reasonably oversee all operations across a full 24-hour cycle. Back-overmen were experienced colliers themselves, promoted for their knowledge of seam conditions, timbering, and ventilation systems. They carried responsibility for production targets, accident prevention, and enforcing pit rules in real time. In some collieries, a third-shift overman might also exist, making the back-overman strictly the afternoon deputy.
Authority and accountability
The back-overman's authority was delegated but absolute during his shift. He could order workers to abandon unsafe sections, impose pit discipline, and make decisions on pit bottom ventilation or equipment deployment. However, he reported directly to the overman and could be held liable for lapses in safety or output targets. The role required literacy and numeracy to keep shift records and manage work allocation among crews.
The terminology reflects the colliery's internal hierarchy. The "back" shift referred to the afternoon period (roughly 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. in traditional British pit schedules), while "overman" was the superintending role itself. Some collieries used alternative titles such as "deputy" or "under-manager," but back-overman was standard in British coal mining through the mid-20th century. The role declined sharply as automated mining reduced the need for multi-tiered underground supervision and as collieries themselves closed.
