A winze is a steeply inclined or vertical shaft driven between two existing mine levels, or from a working level downward into unmapped ground below. Unlike a main shaft, which carries ore, personnel, and ventilation for an entire mine, a winze serves a narrower purpose: linking adjacent levels, testing ore grade at depth, or routing air to lower workings. Winzes are typically smaller in diameter than main shafts and are often driven as raise or sink operations, meaning they can be driven either upward from the lower level or downward from the upper level depending on ground conditions and access.

The most common use is to improve mine geometry and workflow. A vertical or near-vertical winze between levels allows miners to move ore downward by gravity, reducing hauling distance, or to pass equipment and personnel between levels without using the main shaft. Exploration winzes serve a different function: a mine operator driving a winze into virgin ground below a working level can core samples and examine the ore body before committing to opening a new production level. This reconnaissance work prevents the expense of sinking and developing a new level in barren rock.

Ventilation and hazard

Ventilation winzes are dedicated to air movement. In deep mines, fresh air supplied by main fans must reach all working levels; a ventilation winze allows return air from lower levels to travel upward without mixing with intake air, maintaining circulation in otherwise stagnant dead zones. This is critical in coal mines and other workings where methane or carbon dioxide accumulation presents an explosion or suffocation hazard.

Winzes are challenging to drive because they must be supported against rock pressure over their entire length, and collapse in a winze can trap or kill workers. The term itself derives from old mining slang, possibly related to the Spanish word vena (vein), though the etymology is not certain. A winze differs from a raise (which is specifically an upward shaft) and from a stope (an excavated chamber following an ore body), though the words are sometimes used loosely in the field.

Winze dimensions vary with purpose. An exploration winze might be 1.2 to 1.5 metres in diameter; a production winze moving significant ore might reach 2 to 3 metres. They are typically timbered, shotcreted, or lined with steel sets to prevent collapse. In modern mines, some winzes are equipped with skip hoists or conveyor systems to move ore between levels more efficiently than gravity alone allows.
