A bare board is a printed circuit board that has been manufactured through all stages of lamination, etching, and plating, but contains no mounted components, solder joints, or drilled holes for through-hole assembly. It consists of a substrate material, typically FR-4 fiberglass epoxy, with copper traces and pads already formed on one or both sides according to the design artwork. The board is electrically complete in its conductive pathways but mechanically incomplete.
The bare board stage is the critical handoff point between PCB fabrication shops and electronics assembly plants. A fabricator delivers bare boards as flat panels or in strips, usually still connected by tabs or rails that are routed away during final assembly. At this point, the board has undergone etching (removing unwanted copper), plating (adding tin, nickel, or gold finishes to the pads), and possibly via drilling for multilayer boards. The customer inspects for copper continuity, trace width tolerances, pad dimensions, and surface finish quality before proceeding to component placement.
Variants depend on layer count and application. Single and double-sided boards are the most common, but high-density designs may use four, six, eight or more layers with blind and buried vias that are drilled and plated before lamination. Some bare boards include pre-drilled holes for mechanical standoffs or connector mounting; others arrive completely undrilled and receive holes during assembly. Finished surface treatments vary: some boards receive hot air solder leveling (HASL), while others use immersion tin, immersion silver, or electroless nickel-immersion gold (ENIG) for longer shelf life.
The term exists because the board is bare of what makes it a functional circuit: the electronic components. Engineers and procurement staff distinguish bare boards from populated boards (fully assembled) or semi-populated boards (partially stuffed). This distinction matters for cost tracking, quality control, and supply chain planning, since bare boards can be stored longer and reworked more easily than assembled units.
Common defects found at bare board inspection include copper shorts between traces, opens in narrow traces, pad lifting or cratering during plating, contamination in the laminate, and dimensional drift outside tolerance. These are typically detected by automated optical inspection (AOI) or electrical testing before the board is released for assembly. Bare boards that pass testing go into inventory or move directly to pick-and-place machines for component mounting.
