The tree fractures vertically, leaving a section of trunk still standing upright (the "chair") while the bulk of the tree has fallen to one side. This creates an unstable, dangerous configuration where the standing section is under extreme compression and can snap or spring violently without warning.
The split typically initiates at the stump or just above it, driven by the weight and momentum of the falling tree. As the main trunk tips over, the grain separates rather than shearing cleanly, particularly in trees with pronounced radial grain patterns or internal checking. Softwoods like pine and fir are more prone to barber chairing than hardwoods, though it can occur in any species under the wrong conditions. The split usually follows the path of least resistance through the wood structure, often radiating outward from the heartwood.
Why it happens and how to recognize it
Barber chairing results from a combination of factors: excessive back-lean (the tree leaning away from the direction of fall), inadequate notching technique, and high pulling forces that load the tree unevenly. A tree with significant taper, where the diameter decreases rapidly from butt to top, is more vulnerable because the weight distribution creates uneven stress. The condition becomes apparent immediately after the saw is withdrawn, instead of a clean fall, the remaining standing section becomes visible, often with splintered grain exposed.
The danger lies in the stored energy. The standing section is compressed like a spring, and the grain separation creates sharp stress points. The wood can fracture further, the standing piece can hinge and fall unpredictably, or splinters can become projectiles. Operators must never approach or attempt to fell a barber chair by hand tools or by re-cutting; the correct response is to leave the area and fell the standing section with a second cut from a safe angle, or mark it for later removal with mechanical equipment.
Prevention depends on proper felling technique: correct notching geometry, appropriate hinge thickness, back-lean assessment before cutting, and understanding the specific grain orientation of each tree. Horizontal grain (which splits easily) requires different handling than interlocked grain.
