A base cap is a molded strip of wood, MDF, or polymer material that sits directly on top of a baseboard to conceal the joint and create a finished appearance at the wall-to-floor interface. It performs no structural function; its job is purely visual and protective. The base cap covers the top seam where baseboard meets wall, hides gaps caused by settling or uneven framing, and adds visual weight and detail to what would otherwise be a simple rectangular baseboard profile.
Base caps come in a variety of profiles, from simple quarter-round (90-degree arc) and half-round sections to more elaborate crown-like designs. Common sizes range from 5/8 inch to 1 1/4 inches tall. Most are milled from finger-jointed pine or poplar, though MDF versions are cheaper and sand smoother for paint finishes. Hardwood base caps exist for natural stain applications, though they cost significantly more. The width varies with the baseboard it crowns, typically 3 to 5 inches wide at the base.
Installation requires careful fitting. The cap must be scribed or coped at inside corners to avoid visible gaps as the building settles; outside corners are typically mitered at 45 degrees. Fastening is done with finish nails spaced 16 inches apart, driven into studs when possible. Gaps between wall and cap occur frequently if the wall surface is wavy, forcing installers to use paintable caulk as backup. The nails must be set below the surface and filled on painted work.
Where base cap sits in trim hierarchy
Base cap performs a distinct role different from baseboard itself. The baseboard is the primary trim that protects the wall from kicks and protects flooring edges from moisture. Base cap adds a secondary visual layer, allowing for richer, more expensive-looking trim assemblies without making the baseboard itself excessively thick or complex. A wall with baseboard alone looks utilitarian; baseboard plus base cap looks finished and residential. The two pieces together often cost less and install faster than a single tall piece of custom molding.
Common failures include shrinkage separation when base cap is installed too tight to paint-covered baseboard; seasonal wood movement then opens the joint. Another issue is poor scribe fit at inside corners, leaving visible gaps that cannot be caulked without looking sloppy. Base caps in high-moisture areas like bathrooms delaminate if MDF is used without proper sealing, since water wicks up from the floor. Moisture damage often goes unnoticed until the cap warps noticeably away from the wall.
