A batching plant is a facility that proportions and combines raw materials to produce concrete or asphalt in bulk. It takes in dry aggregates (sand, gravel, crushed stone), binders (cement for concrete, bitumen for asphalt), water, and admixtures, then outputs finished mix ready for transport to a job site or into a paving operation. The plant sits between the material quarry and the point of use, controlling quality through precise measurement.
Concrete batching plants come in two main types: central mix plants, which complete mixing on site before loading trucks, and dry batch plants, which discharge proportioned dry materials and water into a truck mixer for blending during transport. Central mix plants are common at large ready-mix suppliers and produce homogeneous batches in 8 to 10 cubic yards per cycle. They use weigh hoppers suspended from load cells to measure materials to within 2 percent accuracy. Dry batch plants are smaller, more portable, and suited to remote sites; they rely on the truck's drum rotation for mixing quality.
Components and operation
A typical concrete plant includes storage silos or bins for cement (often heated to prevent moisture), open stockpiles or bunkers for aggregates, weigh hoppers, a mixer (usually a ribbon or paddle mixer for 2 to 12 cubic yards), a control cabin with scales and timing circuits, and a discharge chute. Modern plants integrate programmable logic controllers to batch materials in sequence, ensuring the right order of loading (aggregates, then cement, then water) for consistent results. Trucks back under the chute and receive the mixed material within 60 to 90 seconds.
Asphalt batching plants operate on similar principles but at higher temperatures. The aggregate is heated to 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit; bitumen is also heated and stored in an insulated tank. A pugmill (high-shear mixer) combines the heated aggregate with bitumen and mineral filler at precise temperatures to ensure coating and workability. These plants must maintain tight temperature control because asphalt stiffens as it cools and becomes unusable if temperatures drop too far before placement.
Batching plants are either portable (mounted on trailers or skids for temporary use) or fixed installations at permanent locations. Portable plants may produce 30 to 100 cubic yards per hour; fixed central-mix plants can exceed 200 cubic yards per hour. Environmental controls are critical: baghouses or scrubbers capture cement dust, and paving plants recycle virgin aggregate fines from the pugmill discharge. Maintenance focuses on wear in mixers and chutes, calibration of scales, and prevention of material segregation or bleeding (especially in asphalt).
