three sisters: indigenous intercrop strategy that actually works

The three sisters is a polyculture system combining maize, climbing beans, and squash in a single planting space. The maize provides a living trellis for the beans to climb; the beans fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, feeding both the maize and squash; the squash spreads across the ground, its broad leaves shading the soil to retain moisture and suppress weeds. All three crops mature on similar timescales and share the same growing season, typically 90 to 120 days depending on variety and climate.

The system originates from Mesoamerican agriculture and remains in active use across North America, Central America, and parts of South America. Maize varieties must be sturdy and tall, typically 180 to 240 centimeters at maturity, to support bean weight without lodging. Pole beans are seeded after the maize reaches 15 to 20 centimeters in height; squash seeds go in at the same time or slightly after. Row spacing varies by region and soil fertility, but a common layout uses hills spaced 60 to 90 centimeters apart, with maize in the center, four to six beans around it, and squash seeds placed outside the circle.

The nitrogen fixation benefit is substantial. Beans contribute 40 to 100 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare to the soil, reducing or eliminating the need for commercial fertilizer. This made the system economically and ecologically viable in pre-industrial agriculture and continues to appeal to low-input farming operations. The squash foliage also reduces soil temperature and evaporative loss, a significant advantage in semi-arid regions.

Common problems and variations

The main drawback is labor intensity at harvest. Separating three crops from a tangled mass requires care; maize ears must be located among bean vines, and squash fruits are often obscured by foliage. Pest pressure can concentrate in the dense growth, particularly vine borers in squash and Mexican bean beetles where they occur. Modern industrial agriculture abandoned the three sisters in favor of monoculture because mechanical harvesting is impossible and per-acre yield of any single crop is typically lower than in dedicated plantings, though total caloric output per unit area often exceeds monoculture systems.

Regional variants exist. In the southwestern United States and Mexico, squash varieties with thinner rinds are preferred for faster maturation. In the Andean region, quinoa or potatoes sometimes replace squash. The term itself reflects colonial-era European observation and naming; the system predates European contact by centuries. In contemporary industrial and alternative agriculture contexts, the three sisters appears in regenerative farming literature, seed catalogs, and educational programs, though it remains marginal compared to conventional row cropping.
