The frame itself is set at the desired batter angle, which means the face of the wall leans inward from bottom to top rather than standing vertical.
The tool works on a basic principle: when the plumb bob hangs freely and touches the sloped face of the rule at a single point, the wall behind it is at the correct angle. A mason holds the rule against the wall being built and adjusts the stonework or brickwork until the plumb line aligns with the reference mark. The batter angle is typically expressed as a ratio, such as 1:6, meaning the wall recesses 1 unit horizontally for every 6 units of height.
Common applications and variants
Batter rules are essential in masonry work for retaining walls, dam construction, and structures where sloped walls are both structural and aesthetic requirements. Modern variants use a spirit level in place of or alongside the plumb bob for faster checking. Some rules incorporate adjustable frames that allow the mason to set different batter angles without fabricating a new tool. Materials vary: timber rules remain common for small projects, while steel-framed rules withstand the wear of repeated site use.
The name derives directly from the angle it measures: a wall that "batters" is one that slopes or recedes. The tool has remained fundamentally unchanged for centuries because the geometry is immutable and the execution is reliable. Without consistent use of a batter rule, walls often end up with irregular slopes, which compromises both drainage performance and visual uniformity.
