English bond
In bricklaying, an arrangement of bricks such that one course has the short sides of the bricks (headers) facing outwards, and the next course has the long sides of the bricks (stretchers) facing outwards.

English bond is a bricklaying pattern in which courses of bricks alternate between headers (bricks laid with their short end facing outward) and stretchers (bricks laid lengthwise). A header course runs perpendicular through the full thickness of the wall; a stretcher course runs parallel to the wall face. This staggered arrangement creates mechanical interlock across the wall depth, binding the inner and outer wythes into a unified structure rather than two separate skins.
The pattern requires precise planning. In a standard English bond, every other course is headers; the stretcher courses are offset so that the vertical joints do not align between courses. This staggers the load path and resists cracking from differential settling or thermal stress. The name reflects its origin and long association with British brickwork practice, where it became the default standard for load-bearing walls until the mid-twentieth century.
Variants and performance
English garden wall bond (also called one-to-three bond) uses three stretcher courses between each header course, reducing material cost while maintaining structural integrity for non-load-bearing walls or single-wythe work. True English bond, however, requires a minimum wall thickness of approximately 215 mm (8.5 inches) to accommodate headers at both faces. Thinner walls or veneer applications cannot achieve genuine English bond without special brick shapes or laying techniques.
The bond's strength comes from its resistance to horizontal shear and its ability to distribute point loads laterally across multiple courses. However, the pattern demands skill: uneven brick sizes, poor mortar joint uniformity, or misalignment of headers will create voids and weak planes. In historic masonry, deterioration often follows the header courses first, as moisture penetrates along mortar joints and freeze-thaw cycles exploit the continuous horizontal path of the header course.
English bond fell out of favor after the 1960s in most developed economies because cavity wall construction and the rise of facing bricks with concrete block backups made the pattern unnecessary and uneconomical. Modern single-leaf load-bearing brickwork typically uses Flemish bond instead, which offers better aesthetic control and equal structural performance with less material waste.
