A bay platform is a passenger platform accessible only from one end of the track, so trains must reverse to leave. The platform sits on a stub of railway line that terminates or connects to the main line at a single point, forcing incoming trains to stop and back out rather than pass through. This layout is common at railway stations where space or operational constraints make through-platform working impractical.

Bay platforms are typically used for branch line termini, local services, or secondary platforms at larger stations. A train arriving at a bay must come to a complete stop, allow passengers to alight and board, then reverse out along the same track it entered. At busy stations, this reversing movement requires careful coordination to avoid conflicts with trains using adjacent platforms or the main line. The platform itself is usually shorter than a through-platform and often slightly offset from the main running lines.

Layout and practical use

Bay platforms work well for services that operate on a regular, predictable cycle. At a terminal station, multiple bays allow different routes or service patterns to run independently; passengers know which platform number corresponds to their destination. The configuration also suits heritage railways and heritage services where train frequency is low and reversing operations pose no scheduling risk. However, they are inefficient for high-frequency services: every train must waste time backing out, blocking the approach track while it does so.

The term 'bay' refers to the alcove-like nature of the platform arrangement, recessed or branching off from the main line much like a bay window projects from a building. This distinguishes bay platforms from through-platforms, where trains pass completely through the station. Signalling and points at the entrance to a bay must be configured to allow safe reversing, and platform staff must be trained in the procedures involved, since passengers boarding and alighting during reversal present a hazard if not properly managed.

Modern rail operations generally favour through-platforms for any service expecting significant frequency or passenger volume. Bay platforms survive chiefly at terminus stations, smaller branch line termini, and at heritage railways where operational simplicity or architectural preservation takes priority over throughput. Some larger stations retain a small number of bays for specific services (often weekend or seasonal trains) while routing main services through the main line platforms.
