hourly rating

A measure of the maximum output, usually expressed in horsepower, that can be obtained from the motors of an electric locomotive for a period of one hour without the motors overheating.

hourly rating: sustained power before thermal limits kick in

An electric locomotive's hourly rating is the maximum power output, stated in horsepower or kilowatts, that its traction motors can deliver continuously for one hour without exceeding safe winding temperatures. This metric exists because motor windings generate heat under load, and that heat must dissipate faster than it builds up, or insulation breaks down and the motor fails.

The rating sits between two other power limits. The short-term peak, or starting rating, is higher and applies for minutes only, used during acceleration. The continuous rating is lower and reflects what the motors can sustain indefinitely without temperature rise. The hourly rating, typically 60 to 90 percent of peak rating depending on the locomotive class, represents a middle ground: harder than continuous work, but sustained long enough to matter in real service, particularly on freight grades or commuter lines where an hour of near-maximum effort is common.

Cooling and thermal design

The actual temperature ceiling depends on insulation class, typically 155 to 180 degrees Celsius for Class F or H windings in modern stock. Air cooling, blower-assisted cooling, or immersion cooling all affect how much power a motor can sustain. A locomotive with larger cooling ducts or forced ventilation can push its hourly rating higher than an otherwise identical older design. The rating is determined in the lab: the motor runs at rated power for 60 minutes while thermocouples monitor winding temperature, and the test is passed only if temperature stabilizes below the limit.

Operators and maintenance crews need hourly rating because it defines the boundary between normal and abusive operation. Running a locomotive at higher power than the hourly rating for prolonged periods causes winding insulation to degrade, shortening motor life and increasing failure risk on the road. Conversely, staying within rating but avoiding the continuous rating for extended periods allows faster schedules without penalizing equipment.

The hourly rating also affects locomotive specification and dispatch. A railroad planning heavy freight service on steep grades might select a locomotive with a higher hourly rating to handle sustained climbing without thermal derate. The rating appears in the official technical data sheet alongside continuous rating, starting tractive effort, and adhesion coefficient, and dispatchers use it to determine whether a given locomotive is fit for a particular turn of duty.
