A cab unit is a diesel or electric locomotive whose body spans the full width of the truck (or trucks) for its entire length, from front coupler to rear coupler. Unlike steam locomotives or some freight diesels that have a narrow boiler or frame with side-mounted equipment, the cab unit presents a unified, box-like profile. The engineer's cabin sits at one end, usually the front, and the engine compartment, fuel tanks, and electrical systems occupy the rest of the body as an integrated structure.

Cab units emerged in the 1930s with streamliner passenger service, where aerodynamic design and smooth appearance were marketing priorities. Early examples include the Burlington Zephyr and the Hiawatha, which used integrated aluminum or steel bodies. Diesel-electric cab units became standard for American passenger service by the 1940s and 1950s. The body design also improved crew comfort and visibility compared to earlier locomotive types, and it allowed more efficient use of internal space for fuel, water tanks, and auxiliary systems.

Cab units appear in both passenger and freight service, though they are more associated with passenger consists. A single cab unit can deliver 2,000 to 4,500 horsepower depending on engine size and configuration. Some railroads operated them in multiple-unit consists, where cabs were connected so that one engineer could control several locomotives operating as a single train. Freight cab units, such as the EMD E7 or Alco PA, were less common but existed for high-speed merchandise service. Passenger cab units like the Electro-Motive Division E-series and the Alco PA were iconic, with hundreds built between the 1930s and 1960s.

The full-width body creates both advantages and challenges. The streamlined appearance reduced air resistance and appealed to passengers. However, the integrated body made internal maintenance and component replacement more difficult than on locomotives where equipment was mounted externally. If the frame or body shell sustained damage, repair could require extensive disassembly. Additionally, the concentrated weight distribution and high center of gravity in some designs meant they were restricted to passenger service speeds and could not handle the rough handling of freight yards.

The term 'cab unit' distinguished these locomotives from general-purpose road switchers and yard engines that emerged later. By the 1960s, the hood unit design (with a long, low hood covering the engine) became dominant for freight and general service, while cab units remained in passenger service. Few cab units remain in active service today, though many are preserved by heritage railroads and museums as examples of streamliner-era design.
