A bee vacuum is a portable suction device designed to capture honeybees or bumblebees alive and unharmed, typically during swarm removal or relocation work. Unlike a standard shop vacuum, it uses low-pressure airflow and a large collection chamber to transport bees without crushing them. The operator holds or positions the intake nozzle near clustered bees, and gentle suction draws them into a mesh or screened holding tank where they can breathe freely.

The core design includes a motor (usually electric, sometimes gasoline-powered), an air intake path, and a baffled collection container separate from the suction mechanism. Many models feature adjustable speed controls to prevent excessive airflow that would injure delicate insects. The collection chamber typically has a screened or mesh bottom and sides to allow air circulation while containing the bees. Some commercial units incorporate a one-way valve system so bees cannot escape back through the intake tube once captured.

Variants and applications

Hand-held versions weigh between 5 and 15 kilograms and are used for small to medium swarms in accessible locations like eaves, tree branches, or roof overhangs. Larger backpack or cart-mounted units handle bigger populations and longer working periods. Professional beekeepers and pest removal specialists use these tools to relocate swarms to hives or move problem colonies away from structures without killing them, which is legally required in many regions and preferred for colony survival. Some units are also employed to capture established colonies from walls or cavities before relocation or rehousing.

The real challenge in bee vacuum design is controlling air pressure precisely. Too much suction tears wings and abdomens; too little leaves bees behind. Most effective units operate around 30 to 50 millibars of suction. Collection chamber design matters equally: a smooth interior and proper air venting prevent bees from clustering in corners and asphyxiating. After capture, bees must be transferred to a proper hive or holding box within hours, as the temporary container provides no food or water.

Bee vacuums occupy a specialized niche in pest management and agricultural equipment supply. They are not standard inventory in most hardware stores but are readily available through beekeeping suppliers, professional pest control distributors, and specialized equipment retailers. Proper use requires training in bee behavior and handling; improper technique can result in escaped swarms or injured insects, making these tools less common in untrained hands despite their apparent simplicity.
