BNC connector: bayonet twist-lock for coax cables

The BNC connector is a small cylindrical coupling used to join two lengths of coaxial cable or to attach a coax cable to a device input. The connector's body houses a contact pin that aligns with the cable's central conductor while a cylindrical shield surrounds it, maintaining the electrical isolation that makes coaxial cable valuable. The name comes from the bayonet-and-coupling twist-lock mechanism: you push the connector straight in, then rotate it about a quarter turn clockwise to lock it in place. A spring clip on the connector body retracts automatically during insertion and snaps back to secure the lock.

BNC connectors come in 50-ohm and 75-ohm versions, corresponding to the impedance of the cable they terminate. The 50-ohm type is standard in RF and microwave work, test equipment, and amateur radio applications. The 75-ohm variant appears in video and cable television systems where signal loss and impedance matching matter but frequencies are typically lower. Both types use the same physical coupling mechanism, which creates a frequent source of errors: mismatched impedance connections may not fail visibly but will cause signal reflections and data corruption.

The connector body is usually nickel-plated brass. The contact pin and socket are typically gold-plated beryllium copper or phosphor bronze. BNC connectors rated for wet environments use stainless steel shells. Cable entry points may be strain-relieved with a flexible boot to prevent kinks and fatigue at the solder or crimp joint, especially important for flexible test leads that endure repeated coiling and movement.

Common failure modes and field issues

The rotating coupling mechanism can wear if mated and unmated repeatedly, eventually allowing a loose connection that introduces noise or intermittent signal loss. The contact pin itself can become oxidized or corroded if exposed to humidity, salt air, or condensation. Improper crimping or soldering of the pin to the center conductor is a leading cause of intermittent faults in field-made assemblies. Over-torquing the bayonet lock can strip the fine threads inside the coupling nut, rendering the connector unusable.

BNC connectors are favored in test and measurement because they mate and release quickly without tools, but this convenience has limits. They are not rated for high-power RF applications above a few watts; power connectors and specialized RF connectors like N-type or SMA handle kilowatt levels or microwave frequencies more reliably. For fixed installations, BNC is also being displaced by push-lock designs (such as those from Lapp or Amphenol) that offer better pull-apart force and require no rotation, reducing wear and operator error.
