The connection of a loom's treadles to its shafts, used in combination with the threading and treadling to create a pattern.
tie-up: the mechanical link between foot pedals and weaving shafts
A tie-up is the set of cords or straps that connect each treadle (foot pedal) of a loom to one or more of the loom's shafts. When a weaver depresses a treadle, the tie-up pulls the attached shafts upward, raising certain warp threads while others stay down. This selective raising and lowering of warp threads, combined with the passage of the weft (shuttle or pick), forms the interlaced structure of fabric. Without a tie-up, there would be no way to control which threads move and when.
The tie-up works in concert with two other controls: the threading (which warp thread goes through which harness eye on each shaft) and the treadling sequence (the order in which the weaver depresses the treadles). These three elements together determine the final pattern. A plain weave requires only two shafts and two treadles; more complex patterns like twills, satins, and elaborate pictorial weaves require eight, sixteen, or even more shafts and treadles, with correspondingly complex tie-ups.
Tie-ups are typically constructed from strong cord, linen tape, or leather straps. Each strand runs from a hole or eye on the underside of a treadle bar, down through the loom frame, and attaches to a shaft or a lever system. The attachment points must be adjustable so that the weaver can set the exact height at which each shaft rises when its treadle is pressed. Too tight, and the shaft rises too high; too loose, and the weaver must press harder to fully raise the warp.
Maintenance and failure modes
Tie-ups wear and fray where they loop around attachment points, especially on floor looms in constant use. A broken or slipping tie-up throws the pattern out of register because the wrong shafts raise at the wrong times. Weavers often carry spare cord and retie connections during a production run rather than stop entirely. The knots and loops must be tied consistently so that all treadles require equal foot pressure, otherwise the weaver's rhythm breaks and selvedges become uneven.
On rigid heddle looms and very small looms, tie-ups may not exist at all, because the rigid heddle or hand-operated mechanism already determines which threads rise. On industrial dobby and jacquard looms, mechanical or electronic control systems have replaced the manual tie-up entirely. However, on hand looms used for sampling, art weaving, and small production runs, the tie-up remains fundamental: it is the weaver's direct, tactile link to pattern control.
