beeline: a timed fuse for controlled detonation
A beeline is a commercial detonating cord used in mines and quarries to achieve predictable, rapid ignition along its length. Unlike a simple spark fuse, which burns at an irregular rate, a beeline contains a measured core of dynamite powder (typically PETN, pentaerythritol tetranitrate) embedded in a textile or plastic sheath. This core burns at a consistent rate, usually between 1500 and 3000 feet per second, depending on the powder charge density and cord construction. The beeline allows operators to reliably time the delay between charges in a blast pattern, which is essential for controlling fragmentation and ground vibration in extraction operations.
The beeline differs from standard detonating cord (det cord) primarily in its lower velocity and simpler construction. Det cord achieves its speed through a compressed metallic powder core (typically PETN or RDX), which is enclosed in plastic or rubber layers; a beeline relies on dynamite powder alone. This makes the beeline cheaper to manufacture and easier to handle in field conditions, though it is less reliable in wet environments and more susceptible to degradation if exposed to moisture or sunlight for extended periods. The beeline is therefore most common in dry underground mines and in quarries where cost and ease of use outweigh the need for the speed and weather resistance of modern det cord.
In blast design, the beeline serves as the primary trunk fuse connecting multiple charges in sequence. A miner burns a beeline on the surface or in the drift, and the flame travels predictably to reach each charge in a controlled sequence. The timing is calculated based on the known burn rate and the distance between drill holes. Miners also use beelines in conjunction with short lengths of quick fuse to adjust the timing between individual charges, creating a staggered detonation pattern that reduces shock to surrounding rock and infrastructure.
Reliability and failure modes
The main failure point of a beeline is incomplete ignition or flame extinction. If the fuse is bent sharply, packed with dirt, or subjected to impact, the flame path can be interrupted. Damp conditions or poor storage can cause the dynamite powder to absorb moisture, which slows the burn rate or causes the fuse to sputter and fail partway along its length. For this reason, beelines must be stored in a dry magazine, kept away from impacts, and inspected for powder leakage or damage before use. A beeline that fails to detonate a charge is a serious hazard that may require the charge to be carefully deactivated and removed, a time-consuming and dangerous operation.
The term "beeline" likely derives from the earlier practice of using a thin trail of blasting powder laid in a straight line on the ground to carry flame from one charge to another, resembling the direct flight path of a bee. As dynamite fuses became standardized in the late 19th century, the name persisted for the powder-core variety. Today, modern operations have largely replaced beelines with electronic delay detonators or plastic-sheathed det cord, which offer greater reliability and flexibility in blast timing. However, beelines remain in use in smaller or older operations, in remote locations where supply chains are limited, and in some underground mines where the lower cost and lower sensitivity to handling justify the trade-off in performance.
