Beeline: A Fuse That Burns to Schedule
Outside the mine, it means the shortest path between two points. Underground, it is a timed explosive fuse with a precise burn rate.
To most people, a beeline is a straight line, the quickest route from here to there. A phrase like "make a beeline for the door" means moving directly and without hesitation toward a destination. The metaphor comes from the observed behavior of honeybees, which return to the hive in a direct line after finding flowers.
In mining and extraction, a beeline is something entirely different: a dynamite fuse with dynamite powder mixed into its length, creating a burn rate that is both rapid and predictable. The powder is distributed along the core of the fuse at a known density, so that when the spark travels through it, the burn advances at a controlled speed measured in seconds per foot. This allows a blasting crew to know exactly when each charge will detonate, making it possible to sequence multiple blasts in a precise pattern.
The beeline sits between two other types of fuse. A common fuse burns slowly and irregularly, making its timing uncertain. A detonating cord, or det cord, uses a core of explosive material and burns so fast that it is used to trigger other charges simultaneously rather than in sequence. The beeline occupies the middle ground: fast enough to reduce the total time of a blast sequence, but slow enough and regular enough that delays between charges can be measured and controlled.
The name itself may derive from the speed of burn, which resembles the swift, purposeful flight of a bee. Or it may refer to the path the spark takes along the fuse: direct and unwavering, like a bee flying home. Either way, the term inverts the everyday meaning. In the mine, a beeline is not about taking the shortest path; it is about taking the right path, at the right speed, at a time that can be calculated in advance. The surface meaning of haste has given way to precision.
