A bent is a complete cross-sectional frame, running perpendicular to the length of a timber structure, that carries the primary load from roof or floor down to the foundation. In a barn, house, or industrial building, multiple bents spaced typically 12 to 16 feet apart form the structural skeleton; each bent consists of posts (vertical members), beams (horizontal members), and often diagonal bracing that ties them together into a rigid, self-supporting unit.

The posts of a bent are its load-bearing spine. In traditional heavy timber construction, these are often 8 by 10 inches or larger, set into mortise and tenon joints with the beams. The beam running horizontally across the tops of the posts is called the tie beam when it resists outward thrust, or a plate when it simply distributes load. Diagonal bracing, such as X-braces or knee braces, prevents the frame from racking (twisting out of square) under wind or uneven loading.

Bents are the reason timber-frame buildings are demountable and relocatable. Because each bent functions as an independent frame, the whole structure can be assembled by stacking bents side by side and connecting them with girts (side beams) and purlins (roof-spanning beams). This approach made sense for colonial barns and mills, where skilled labor was available on-site but materials had to be moved by hand or animal.

The term likely derives from the bent shape of the assembly when viewed in profile, especially when the posts lean inward slightly (a common design choice that improves wind resistance and appearance). In modern platform-frame construction, bents have largely been replaced by repetitive stud walls, but the principle remains: each section of framing must transfer loads safely to the ground, and doing it in discrete, testable units is good engineering.

A bent fails when any of its members buckles, splits, or separates at its joints. Posts rot at the base if not raised above grade; beams sag if undersized or wet; diagonal bracing can be racked out by accumulated settlement or by overloading one side. Inspecting a bent means checking plumb of posts, tightness of mortise joints, and soundness of wood with a probe or auger, since interior decay is invisible until it is advanced.
