In carpentry, a stick is a length of wood, usually square or rectangular in cross-section, that has been dimensioned and cut from larger stock for use in framing, joinery, or assembly. A stick might be 2 by 4 inches (51 by 102 mm) rough-sawn lumber for wall studs, or a piece of 3/4-inch (19 mm) hardwood for cabinet rails. The term is casual but precise: it refers to the workpiece itself, already rough-dimensioned but not necessarily finished or fitted.
Carpenters use 'stick' to distinguish a prepared length of wood from a plank, board, or tree. Where a board is flat and relatively wide, a stick has modest cross-section and is often longer in proportion to its thickness. A builder might say 'grab a 16-foot stick of 2x4' when framing walls, or a furniture maker might talk of 'selecting sticks' from a pile of dried hardwood before milling. The word conveys both the material and its rough readiness for the next operation.
Most sticks arrive at the jobsite or workshop either rough-sawn directly from the mill or planed to nominal dimension. Softwood sticks, usually pine, fir, or spruce, dry relatively fast and are standard for construction framing. Hardwood sticks, such as oak, maple, or walnut, require more careful handling and longer drying times to prevent checking or warping. A carpenter must inspect each stick for defects: knots, splits, twists, or areas of rot that will fail in service or that demand extra labor to work around.
The term also applies during assembly. A joiner building a frame 'lays up sticks' when arranging pieces before gluing and clamping. In this context, stick means a component piece, sized and ready to receive mortises, tenons, or other joinery. Once assembled and sanded, the same wood becomes part of a larger object: rails, stiles, or stretchers.
Moisture content and seasoning affect every stick. Green (freshly cut) wood shrinks unpredictably; properly seasoned wood, typically 8 to 12 percent moisture content for interior use, is more stable. A stick that checks or warps mid-project has usually not been stored flat, protected from sun, or allowed time to acclimate to the workshop environment. Cost-conscious builders sometimes accept lower-grade sticks with minor defects and design around them; precision work demands better material from the start.
