Black sand is a naturally occurring concentrate of heavy iron-bearing minerals, chiefly magnetite, ilmenite, and hematite, that accumulates in alluvial deposits and beach environments. The black color comes from its magnetite content, which is strongly magnetic; a small magnet held near black sand will visibly attract the grains. It forms where water movement has sorted sediments by density, leaving the heavier minerals behind while lighter silica sand is carried away.

Black sand occurs most commonly in placer deposits along streams, river bends, and ancient waterways where density separation happens naturally over time. In coastal mining, it accumulates in beach sands, particularly near iron-rich rock outcrops. The concentration varies widely depending on the parent geology; some deposits contain 5 percent black minerals by weight, while rich deposits may exceed 30 percent. The grain size typically ranges from fine sand to coarse sand, around 0.1 to 0.5 millimeters in diameter.

Black sand is recovered using simple gravity separation and magnetic methods. The magnetic property of magnetite makes it straightforward to separate from lighter silica using permanent magnets or electromagnetic equipment. Historically, placer miners would pan for gold and find black sand as a byproduct; the heavier black minerals would settle faster, often trapping fine gold particles underneath. Today, black sand itself has value as a source of iron ore and titanium in some regions, though recovery is uneconomical unless deposits are exceptionally rich or located near iron processing facilities.

The main problems encountered are the opposite of what miners seek: when black sand accumulates too heavily in a working placer operation, it slows processing and makes gravity concentration inefficient. Black sand concentrates can also contain radioactive thorium compounds, particularly in older deposits, requiring radiological assessment before processing or sale. Water discharge from black sand operations may carry fine magnetite dust, which is environmentally tracked in some jurisdictions.

The term 'black sand' is descriptive and appears in mining literature since at least the nineteenth century. Its presence is a reliable indicator of heavy mineral enrichment and helps experienced prospectors recognize favorable ground for both precious metals and industrial minerals.
