A hoistroom is the surface structure housing the hoist machinery that lowers and raises men, ore, and equipment through a mineshaft. It sits directly above the shaft collar and contains the electric or diesel motor, the drum or pulley around which steel cable winds, the brake system, and the control cabin. The hoistroom is the mechanical heart of the shaft, and everything that moves underground depends on its reliability.

The hoist itself is either a friction drum type, where the cable wraps around a turning drum and grips through pressure, or a reel type, where cable winds onto a spool. Modern mines use electric hoists with direct-drive motors rated between 500 and 3000 kilowatts, coupled to a gearbox that reduces the motor speed to suit the drum or pulley. Older installations may use steam or compressed-air driven hoists, though these are now rare in active mines.

The hoistroom must be robustly engineered because the motor and brake experience shock loads each time the cage or skip reaches the end of the shaft. The brake, usually a spring-applied, power-released drum brake, must be capable of holding a full load suspended indefinitely and of stopping a moving cage from full speed within seconds. A failed brake is catastrophic, so hoistrooms include failsafe mechanical and hydraulic backup systems.

Layout matters. The hoist operator sits in a booth with direct line-of-sight to the shaft collar or monitors showing cage position. Cable passes over a sheave (guide pulley) at the top of the headframe before entering the hoistroom. Counterweight systems balance the load to reduce motor power demand. The entire structure must withstand wind and seismic forces because its failure can trap or drop a cage of workers.

Hoistroom design varies by shaft depth and duty. A shallow shaft serving a stone quarry may house a simple single-drum hoist with manual controls; a deep hard-rock mine shaft serving multiple underground levels uses a double-drum hoist with automated load-balancing and electronic distance indicators. All hoistrooms require regular inspection of cable, sheaves, brake linings, and motor bearings because wear is relentless and unplanned downtime stops the entire operation.
