A rivet which can be fixed with access only to the factory head end; most commonly a pop rivet fitted by passing the bucktail through the sheets to be secured, then attaching a rivet gun to a frangible mandrel through the centre of the rivet, which upsets the bucktail to form the field head and breaks off when the correct pressure has been achieved.
blind rivet: one-sided fastening that needs no hammering
A blind rivet is a tubular fastener driven entirely from one side of a joint. The worker inserts the rivet through pre-drilled holes in overlapping sheets or panels, then uses a rivet gun to pull a mandrel (a steel rod running through the rivet's center) upward. As the mandrel pulls, the hollow tail of the rivet flares outward against the far surface, forming a mechanical lock without access to the back side. Once the flare is complete and full pressure is reached, the mandrel snaps off at a designed break point, leaving the rivet permanently set.
The most common type is the pop rivet or pull rivet, standardized in diameters from 3/32 inch to 1/4 inch and in several grip ranges to suit different material thicknesses. Aluminum-to-aluminum rivets use soft aluminum mandrels; steel rivets use hardened steel mandrels for greater shear strength. The rivet gun itself is typically a hand tool with a lever mechanism (manual) or a pneumatic or electric motor that applies steady pull force. Larger structural work uses hydraulic guns rated in tons of pull force.
Blind rivets appear across aerospace, automotive sheet metal, HVAC ductwork, sign making, and trailer manufacture wherever panels are joined without access to the rear. They work on thin gauges (down to 0.016 inch aluminum) because they generate no shock or vibration, unlike hammered rivets. They are faster to install than threaded fasteners and require no nut on the far side.
Failure modes and material selection
The weak point is the shear strength of the mandrel itself; if pull force exceeds mandrel strength, the mandrel simply bends and spins without forming a proper tail flare. Selecting the wrong mandrel material for the rivet body causes brittle failure. Corrosion is another issue: aluminum rivets on galvanized steel can induce galvanic attack at the joint interface, so isolation washers or stainless steel rivets are used in outdoor or humid environments. Over-pulling, which can happen with worn or miscalibrated guns, causes the rivet body to crack circumferentially.
The term "blind" refers to the fact that the worker cannot see or access the rear surface where the head forms. This contrasts with solid rivets, which are set from both ends by hammer or press, and which require clearance and vision on the back side. Blind rivets traded precision and shear load capacity for speed and one-sided access, making them a practical choice for thin-walled assemblies where the joint will not see extreme tensile or bending loads.
