Blind nailing drives fasteners through material in a way that hides the nail head from view, either by burying it beneath the surface or by concealing it behind an adjacent board or trim. In flooring, the most common application, nails are driven at an angle through the tongue of a hardwood or engineered plank so that the groove of the next plank covers the nail head completely. This method serves both aesthetic and functional purposes: it preserves the visual uniformity of the finished surface and protects the fastener from weather exposure, standing water, and corrosion.
The technique requires purpose-designed equipment. A pneumatic flooring nailer is angled to drive a fastener (typically 1.5 to 2 inches long) through the tongue at roughly 45 degrees. The nailer's head rides along the top edge of the board to guide the angle and depth. Some carpenters also use a manual brad awl or nail set to start blind nails in trim work, driving them by hand hammer where pneumatic tools are impractical. Finish nails (which have smaller heads) are preferred for visible surfaces like baseboards and crown moulding, whereas ring-shank or spiral nails are used in flooring for superior holding power.
Common failures and limitations
Blind nailing fails when the angle is too shallow, leaving the nail head protruding into the groove; when the fastener bends on a hard knot or grain reversal; or when the tongue itself splits under impact. In flooring, improper tension in pneumatic nailers can cause the fastener to miss the tongue entirely and go through the face of the board instead. Moisture movement in solid wood flooring can also cause the surface to cup or crown, working fasteners loose over time regardless of initial technique.
The term reflects the fundamental principle: the nail head is blind to view once installation is complete. This contrasts with surface nailing, where fasteners are driven perpendicular to the board face and their heads remain exposed. In engineered flooring and vinyl plank materials, blind nailing is less common because these substrates are dimensionally stable and often glued down instead; the technique remains essential in solid hardwood installation, where seasonal wood movement makes mechanical fastening along the hidden edge necessary.
