A blunger is a rotating vessel, typically cylindrical and mounted vertically, that mixes clay and water into a homogeneous slip suitable for casting or throwing. The vessel contains a central rotating shaft fitted with blades or paddles that churn the mixture; the shaft turns at speeds between 20 and 100 rpm depending on the clay type and desired consistency. Water is added to dry clay or clay scraps, and the blunger reduces lumps and air pockets while distributing moisture evenly throughout the batch.
Industrial blungers range from small 50-litre lab units to 500-litre production tanks. The vessel walls are lined with hard-wearing ceramic or rubber to resist abrasion from grit in recycled clay; the shaft and blade assembly is typically mild steel or stainless steel. A perforated screen or vibrating deck at the base allows finished slip to drain into a settling tank, where heavier solids (sand, grit) settle before the slip moves to storage or moulding.
The blunger solves a real problem in ceramic production: clay bodies contain moisture variation and must be homogeneous to behave consistently in casting or wheel-throwing. Hand-mixing cannot achieve the uniformity that machine blunging produces. Many potteries use blungers to recycle trimmings and rejected ware by slaking them back into slip, reducing waste and raw material cost.
Common faults include uneven mixing if the blade geometry wears or if the shaft alignment drifts, which leaves dead spots where clay clumps accumulate. Overloading with clay relative to water causes the motor to stall; underloading wastes power and extends cycle time. The name blunger derives from the verb blunge, itself of uncertain origin but attested in English pottery works by the 18th century, possibly from a corruption of an older word for churning or beating.
A blunger is distinct from a pug mill, which extrudes wedged clay from a screw-driven barrel, and from a ball mill, which grinds dry materials by rotation in a drum full of ceramic or stone balls. The blunger's role is mixing rather than grinding or forming, making it essential in slip-casting operations where particle size and slip density must be closely controlled.
