Blush is a surface defect that appears as a white or milky haze on doped or varnished fabric and wood surfaces in aircraft. It occurs when moisture becomes trapped in the coating during application or curing, typically in humid conditions or when the material itself is damp. The precipitate forms because the solvent evaporates too quickly, cooling the surface below the dew point and allowing condensation to form within the finish layer.
The condition is most common when applying cellulose dope to fabric-covered wings and fuselages, and with conventional aircraft varnishes on wooden components. High relative humidity, temperatures below 65°F (approximately 18°C), or applying finish to damp substrates all increase the risk. The white appearance comes from tiny water droplets suspended in the uncured film, which should be perfectly clear once fully hardened.
Why it matters and how to fix it
Blush is purely cosmetic when it appears, but it indicates incomplete curing and may signal underlying adhesion problems. A blush film may not harden properly and can become tacky or fail to develop full hardness. Light blush sometimes clears as the finish continues to cure in dry conditions, but heavy blush requires sanding back and reapplication. Prevention is far more practical: maintain shop humidity below 85 percent relative humidity, ensure surfaces are completely dry before coating, and apply dope or varnish only when air temperature is rising or stable.
The term reflects the appearance: a blush is that flushed, pinkish-white coloration, here appearing as an unwanted surface bloom. It remains common enough in aircraft maintenance that respray schedules routinely account for it, especially in operations near coasts or in high-humidity climates where cloth-and-dope aircraft are still maintained.
