Bo-Bo

A wheel arrangement for diesel and electric locomotives signifying that a locomotive has four axles, each powered by a motor, on two bogies.

A Bo-Bo locomotive has two powered bogies (wheel assemblies), each with two powered axles. The notation comes from railway classification: each letter represents an unpowered axle, each number represents a powered axle, so Bo-Bo means unpowered-two powered, unpowered-two powered. The result is a four-axle machine where all four wheels deliver tractive effort to the rails.

This arrangement became dominant in diesel-electric and electric railway fleets from the mid-twentieth century onward because it balances adhesion, wheel wear, and axle stress. With all four axles powered, the locomotive generates high pulling force relative to its weight, crucial for freight trains and fast passenger service. The two independent bogies allow the locomotive to negotiate curves smoothly; each bogie swings independently rather than forcing the entire wheelbase around a bend. Typical Bo-Bo machines weigh between 60 and 100 tonnes and commonly operate on both main line and yard duties.

The motor configuration differs between diesel and electric variants. A diesel-electric Bo-Bo uses a diesel engine driving an electrical generator or alternator, which powers four traction motors, one per axle. Electric Bo-Bo machines draw current from overhead lines or a third rail and feed that current directly to the same traction motor arrangement. Both types depend on independent axle motors to distribute power evenly and prevent wheel slip during acceleration.

Where Bo-Bo fits in locomotive hierarchy

Simpler wheel arrangements like Co-Co (six powered axles) offer more adhesion for heavy freight but are less nimble and harder on track. Four-wheel arrangements (B-B) reduce wheel count but generate proportionally more axle loading. Bo-Bo represents the practical middle ground: sufficient power and grip for most railway duties, acceptable wear patterns, and manageable maintenance. Most modern shunting (yard switching) and regional passenger locomotives are Bo-Bo or Co-Co.

The term is used consistently across global railways: British Rail, French SNCF, German DB, and Japanese National Railways all operated Bo-Bo fleets. The classification remains relevant because the fundamental principle, that independent powered axles improve adhesion and track behaviour, has not been superseded. Understanding Bo-Bo as a type signals that you are dealing with a machine capable of significant tractive effort, suitable for either freight or mixed-traffic service, and mechanically less demanding than six-axle alternatives.
