A boar hog is an uncastrated male pig retained in a breeding herd or operation. The term distinguishes this animal from a barrow (castrated male), gilt (young female), or sow (mature female). Boar hogs exist for one purpose: to sire offspring. On commercial operations, a single boar hog may service dozens of females per breeding cycle, making his genetic contribution and health directly critical to herd productivity and profitability.

Boar hogs are sexually mature by 6 to 8 months of age, though most producers do not use them for breeding until 8 to 12 months to allow frame and muscle development. A healthy boar hog can remain productive for 5 to 7 years, though working life varies with breed, body condition, and injury. Large-frame breeds such as Berkshires, Durocs, and Yorkshires are common choices for breeding stock. Boar hogs intended for the meat supply chain, by contrast, are typically castrated at 2 to 3 weeks of age to prevent boar taint (an off-flavor in pork caused by androstenone and skatole compounds) and reduce aggressive behavior.

Managing a boar hog requires separate housing away from breeding females during non-breeding periods. The animals are prone to aggression toward rivals and can inflict serious injury to each other or handlers. A mature boar hog can weigh 400 to 600 pounds or more depending on breed. Producers must monitor body condition closely, as overweight or underweight boar hogs suffer reduced fertility and libido. Feet and leg soundness is equally critical, since a boar hog unable to mount will be economically useless within weeks.

Regional terminology

The term boar hog is primarily regional to North America, particularly the American South and Midwest. In other English-speaking regions, the animal is called simply a boar or a breeding boar. The word hog itself varies geographically: it can refer to any pig, or specifically to larger pigs intended for meat. Adding hog after boar emphasizes the animal's role in commercial production rather than ornamental or hobby contexts.

Disease surveillance is a constant concern. A boar hog ill with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) or porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) can transmit infection to the entire breeding herd, causing abortion, stillbirth, and piglet mortality. For this reason, boar hogs are often isolated and tested before introduction to an operation. Their value as genetic carriers makes them simultaneously valuable assets and biosecurity risks.
