In underground coal mining, a bord is a working face cut parallel to the natural cleat or joint pattern of the coal seam, rather than across it. The cleat forms natural fissures in the coal, running in two roughly perpendicular directions. A bord follows one of these directions, allowing the coal to separate more easily and reducing the energy needed to extract it. This orientation contrasts with a pillar or wall approach, where faces are driven across the grain.

The bord system developed in British collieries, particularly in the Midlands and northern England, and remains standard in many underground operations. Miners advance the working face along the cleat direction, with the natural joint planes opening up as the coal is undercut and broken. The geometry is efficient: coal falls more readily when the working aligns with its inherent structure, and props or temporary supports are easier to place. The width of a bord typically ranges from 3 to 5 meters, though this varies with seam thickness, coal quality, and roof stability.

Bords in the wider extraction pattern

A bord-and-pillar layout divides the seam into a grid of working bords separated by pillars of coal left in place to support the roof. This allows extraction to proceed systematically, with coal pillars later worked back or left as permanent support. The spacing of bords, their orientation to the cleat, and pillar dimensions are set before mining begins, based on geological survey and calculations of roof load. Poor pillar design or excessive bord width in weak coal leads to roof collapse, rib slips (fractures in the coal wall beside the bord), or sudden gas release.

The term bord itself derives from Old French bord, meaning edge or border, reflecting how the working face forms a border along the cleat. In some mining regions, synonymous terms such as heading, note, or gate are used, though these often carry slightly different connotations. A gate, for instance, may refer specifically to a main access road driven through coal, whereas a bord is the coal-winning face itself.

Modern bord workings depend on accurate geotechnical mapping of the seam and cleat orientation beforehand. Roof bolting, coal dust suppression, and ventilation of methane are routine safety measures in bords, particularly in deep seams where vertical stress and gas pressure are high. The choice between bord-and-pillar and longwall mining reflects seam depth, thickness, and recovery targets; bord systems offer flexibility and lower capital outlay but recover less coal overall than longwall when pillars are abandoned.
