In coal mining, claggy describes material, usually coal dust or fine coal particles, that sticks persistently to machinery, conveyors, screens, and handling equipment. The adhesion is often worse when the coal contains moisture or clay minerals that act as binding agents. Unlike dry, friable coal that flows freely, claggy coal creates operational headaches: it builds up in chutes, blocks hoppers, clogs conveyor idlers, and reduces the effectiveness of screening and separation equipment.
The stickiness arises from a combination of factors. Coal with higher moisture content (above 8 to 12 percent, depending on rank and geology) tends to be more claggy. Fine particles, especially those under 1 millimeter, have more surface area to make contact and adhere. Shale, clay, and other carbonaceous fines mixed with the coal act as natural adhesives. In weathered or oxidized seams, the coal surface becomes more hydrophilic, making it grab at steel and rubber surfaces with aggravating tenacity.
Operators combat claggy coal through design and process control. Self-cleaning conveyor idlers with grooved or ceramic surfaces resist buildup better than smooth rollers. Spray systems that apply small amounts of water paradoxically help in some cases, as they can reduce electrostatic adhesion or allow material to slide rather than stick. Some operations adjust transfer chute angles to 55 to 60 degrees, steep enough that material will shear and flow rather than adhere. Screening can be problematic, but inclined screens with higher deck angles and faster vibration frequencies help material move through rather than cake on the mesh.
The term itself comes from the British colloquialism clag, meaning to stick or adhere (from Old English and German roots). In mining contexts it has become a technical descriptor of a real problem: a coal that has lost its dry, flowing character and become a nuisance to handle. Claggy coal is neither desirable nor unusual; it is simply a material property that miners must recognize and manage, often by adjusting haulage schedules, cleaning protocols, or processing parameters to keep downstream equipment operational.
