A borrowed neutral occurs when the neutral conductor of one circuit carries return current from a second, separate circuit. This happens when an electrician runs hot and neutral wires from different breakers through the same cable or conduit, then connects both neutrals to the same neutral bus bar in the panel. The neutral wire then handles current from both circuits simultaneously, creating a shared return path that was never designed into either circuit.
The practice typically emerges in older wiring systems or retrofit installations where running separate neutral conductors to each circuit would require additional cable runs or larger conduit. A common scenario involves a 240-volt circuit (like a range) whose neutral is repurposed to complete a 120-volt circuit in the same area. Because the neutral is theoretically at ground potential, someone may incorrectly reason it is safe to share. In reality, the neutral carries current equal to the load on the circuit, and combining two circuits means the wire carries the sum of both return currents.
The primary hazard is overheating. If each circuit normally draws 15 amps on its neutral, a shared neutral carries 30 amps, yet the wire may be sized for 15 amps. The wire heats up, insulation degrades, and fire risk rises. A second risk is voltage shift: when one circuit draws heavily, the voltage drop across the shared neutral affects the reference voltage for the other circuit, causing lights to dim unpredictably or equipment to malfunction. A third danger is that opening the breaker for one circuit does not de-energize the shared neutral, leaving it live and creating a shock hazard during maintenance.
Code authorities and inspectors now regard borrowed neutrals as a serious violation. The National Electrical Code treats multi-wire branch circuits (which can share a neutral under strict rules) separately from simple circuit borrowing. A legitimate multi-wire circuit runs two or more hot conductors from the same breaker assembly with a single shared neutral, and the breakers trip together. A borrowed neutral bypasses this protection entirely: the breakers are independent, so opening one leaves the neutral energized by the other circuit.
Electricians and facilities managers must identify borrowed neutrals during audits of older buildings. Signs include circuits sharing the same cable, neutrals tied together downstream of the main panel, or appliances and lighting fed from the same run but different breakers. Remediation requires running a separate neutral conductor back to the panel, which may mean pulling new wire through existing conduit, installing additional conduit, or upgrading cable. In retrofit situations, this is often the costliest part of bringing wiring into compliance.
