A diverter is a switching mechanism that intercepts an incoming telephone call and redirects it to a different line, extension, or external number. In legacy and modern telephony systems alike, it sits between the call arrival point and the intended recipient, allowing selective or blanket routing based on conditions like time, availability, or explicit user command.
The simplest form is a manual diverter, operated by an operator or user at a switchboard or telephone instrument to send calls to voicemail, a colleague, or an outside line. Modern systems use call diversion software built into PBX and VoIP platforms, triggered by conditions such as no-answer timeout, busy signal, or do-not-disturb status. Some diverters function at the exchange level, controlled by the carrier; others operate at the premises level, under subscriber control.
Variants and operation
Call forwarding is the most common form: a permanent or temporary rule that sends all incoming calls to a specified number. Selective diversion routes calls based on caller ID, time of day, or call type. Follow-me systems chain multiple destination numbers in sequence, trying each until someone answers. Hunt groups and overflow diverters distribute calls across multiple agents or lines to prevent dropped calls during peak traffic.
Diverters depend on signalling protocols to identify calls and apply routing rules. In analog systems, this happens at the exchange or on the subscriber line itself. In digital and IP telephony, the diverter logic runs on a server and uses Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) or similar standards to redirect call legs. Failure modes include calls looping between diverters, calls being diverted to disconnected numbers, or diversion rules persisting after a user intended to disable them, leading to missed communications.
The term reflects its mechanical and later electronic origins: to divert a call is to turn its path aside from the normal route. In older exchanges, this was literal: an operator's cord or relay physically changed which circuit the call traveled on. Today the concept persists in software, but the underlying logic is identical: match a set of conditions, then forward the call elsewhere.
