A brake line is a tube, usually steel or reinforced rubber hose, that carries pressurized hydraulic fluid from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders or caliper pistons. When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder generates pressure that travels through these lines, forcing pistons outward against brake pads or shoes to create friction. Without brake lines, that pedal pressure would go nowhere.
Brake systems use two main line types. Hard steel tubing, often double-flared at the ends and secured with compression fittings, runs the length of the chassis where it is protected from damage. Flexible hose, typically braided steel reinforced rubber, connects the fixed lines to moving parts like wheel cylinders, which shift with suspension travel. Most vehicles use a combination: steel lines for the frame runs and hose for the final connections to each wheel. Hose also absorbs some vibration and pressure spikes that would otherwise transmit harshly through the system.
Failure and maintenance
Brake lines fail primarily through corrosion from moisture and road salt. A microscopic rust hole can leak fluid, reducing pressure and brake response. More catastrophically, a ruptured line causes complete loss of pressure to one or more wheels; modern dual-circuit systems minimize this risk by routing each circuit through separate lines to different wheel pairs, so losing one line only affects a corner or two. Flexible hose degrades as the rubber perishes and the wire reinforcement corrodes, typically after ten to fifteen years. DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid absorbs moisture from air over time, lowering its boiling point and accelerating internal corrosion of steel lines. This is why regular brake fluid changes are necessary.
Brake lines operate at pressures from 600 to over 1000 psi in normal braking; ABS systems and brake assist can push these higher. Copper-nickel plating and specialized coatings on steel lines resist corrosion. Lines must be routed and clamped carefully to avoid rubbing against edges, which can wear through the wall. Hard line damage is typically repaired by replacement of the affected section rather than patching; hose replacement is straightforward but must use correctly sized and rated hose, never improvised tubing.
The term 'brake line' is simple and direct: it is the line that carries brake fluid. In technical documents you may also see 'hydraulic line', 'brake hose', or 'brake tubing' used more precisely to distinguish the material or location, but the trade uses 'brake line' as the general category for any tube in this circuit, and diagrams label them clearly by circuit and wheel.
