E10: petrol cut with 10% ethanol by volume

E10 is a motor fuel containing 90 percent unleaded petrol and 10 percent ethanol by volume. The ethanol is typically produced from fermented grain or sugarcane, though synthetic ethanol from other feedstocks exists. It is sold as a direct replacement for standard unleaded petrol at filling stations across Europe, Australia, and parts of North America.

The ethanol content boosts the fuel's octane rating, usually raising it by 1 to 3 points compared to the base petrol. This allows manufacturers to optimize engine tuning for slightly higher compression ratios. Ethanol also burns more completely than pure hydrocarbons, which reduces certain tailpipe emissions. However, ethanol has roughly 34 percent lower energy content per liter than petrol, so fuel consumption increases marginally, typically 2 to 5 percent, to achieve the same driving distance.

Compatibility and Engine Concerns

Not all vehicles are approved for E10 use. The ethanol content can degrade rubber and cork seals, fuel hoses, and internal fuel system components in older engines not engineered to tolerate it. Most cars manufactured after 2000 handle E10 without issue; many from the 1990s do as well, but the threshold varies by manufacturer and design. Owners of classic motorcycles, lawn equipment, small engines, and some vehicles made before 1986 should avoid E10 altogether. Fuel system corrosion and valve seat wear have been documented in incompatible engines run on E10 over extended periods.

Water absorption is another material concern. Ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from air and fuel tanks. If water content rises above roughly 0.5 percent, phase separation can occur: the ethanol and water drop out of solution and settle at the tank bottom, leaving less solvent petrol above. This stratified fuel can clog fuel filters and starve injectors. Tanks left unused for months, especially in humid climates, are vulnerable.

E10 pricing tracks the cost of crude oil and ethanol production. In regions where ethanol crops receive subsidy, E10 may undercut standard unleaded at the pump. Supply chains are generally robust in the EU and Australia, where E10 is mandated or heavily promoted as a renewable fuel policy. Storage requirements are similar to conventional petrol, though sealed containers are preferable to minimize water ingress.
