A person employed to work the steam engine or other machinery that raises the coal from the mine.

A brakeman was the worker responsible for operating the brake system on a mine hoist, the steam-powered or later electric engine that raised and lowered the cage or skip carrying coal and workers in and out of the shaft. The role required constant vigilance: the brakeman sat at or stood near the brake lever during every cage movement, ready to arrest the load instantly if the rope showed strain, if a signal came from below, or if mechanical failure threatened. In deep mines working continuous shifts, a skilled brakeman was essential to safe operation.

The hoist engine itself was substantial machinery, often a horizontal or vertical steam engine with a large diameter drum around which the steel rope wound. The brake was a friction brake, typically a band or shoe that pressed against the drum or a brake wheel bolted to the engine shaft. The brakeman operated this brake through a lever system, sometimes assisted by a hand wheel for finer control. On larger modern installations, brakes became power-assisted or fully automatic, but the brakeman's role persisted as monitor and emergency controller.

The Work and Its Hazards

Brakemen worked in engine houses located at the pit head, often in noise and heat from the boiler and steam lines. They communicated with the shaft bottom through bell signals or later speaking tubes, interpreting coded signals that told them how many people or how much tonnage was in the cage. Fatigue was a real danger: a momentary lapse in attention could allow an overwind, where the cage struck the pit head timbers, or a slack rope incident that snapped the cable under sudden load. Many mines required the brakeman to maintain a logbook recording each cage journey and noting any unusual vibration, noise, or rope condition.

The term brakeman was specific to underground coal mining in Britain and parts of Europe, particularly from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s. In American mines, the equivalent role was often called a hoisting engineer or hoist operator. As automated and later computerized controls replaced manual lever operation, the job title and the skill set both faded. By the late twentieth century, the role existed mainly in historical context, though the safety principles the brakeman embodied remained central to hoist design and regulation.
