helper-up: a junior worker assisting ore extraction from shafts
A helper-up was a young laborer, typically a boy or adolescent, stationed at the bottom of a mine shaft or other deep excavation to assist the barrowman, who was responsible for moving ore, coal, or waste rock out of the working face. The helper-up's primary job was to load material into the barrow or tub and to manage the logistics of getting filled containers ready for hoisting or hauling to the surface. This role was common in hard rock mines, tin and copper workings, and deep coal seams where the "dip place" or lowest working level required a two-person operation.
The term "dip place" referred to the deepest section of a mine shaft where water naturally accumulated and where the most physically demanding extraction work occurred. A barrowman working at this depth could not efficiently manage both excavation support and material transport alone. The helper-up kept barrows moving, sorted larger stone from ore, and ensured the barrowman had clear working space. The relationship was hierarchical: the helper-up answered to the barrowman and learned the trade through hands-on experience.
Conditions and hazards
Helper-ups faced severe occupational hazards including poor ventilation, standing water, roof collapse, and repetitive strain injury from moving heavy loads. The damp conditions at shaft bottom accelerated respiratory illness. Child labor laws and mechanization of ore transport have eliminated the role, though the terminology persists in historical mining records and accounts of 19th-century mining practice across Britain and North America.
The role sits within the broader hierarchy of underground mining labor: above that rank were the actual miners who worked the face; below were water carriers and other junior helpers. Larger operations employed multiple helper-ups per shift. Payment was typically piecework or day wages substantially below what the barrowman earned, reflecting the skill differential and the expendability of junior labor in extractive industries of that era.
