Manwinding is the controlled movement of workers between surface and underground levels using cages suspended from wire ropes. In deep mines, workers cannot walk or climb; the cage is their only practical route. A typical installation consists of a steel framework at the pit head, a winding engine (historically steam-driven, now electric), thousands of metres of steel rope, and one or more cages capable of holding 12 to 40 people depending on the mine's depth and design. The engine operator controls descent and ascent from a cabin, managing speed, load, and emergency stop functions.

Two main cage types serve different purposes. A conveyance cage carries workers; it features handrails, a roof or canopy, and safety gates that seal when the cage moves. A skipway cage or skip is designed for ore or waste rock, though some mines run both on the same rope or on parallel ropes. Rope diameter ranges from 16 mm to 32 mm for major installations, and a single shaft may use four to six ropes for redundancy. Modern systems employ cage-guided winding, in which the cage is held centrally within the shaft by roller guides, reducing wear and swing.

Hazards and constraints

Manwinding failures are catastrophic. Rope corrosion, metal fatigue, and uneven wear are the chief threats; ropes are inspected regularly and replaced on strict schedules, typically every 5 to 10 years depending on throughput and rope diameter. Cage overloading is prevented by weight sensors. Excessive speed causes cage sway and compression injuries; descent rates are held to 3 to 5 metres per second for passenger cages. The most dangerous moment is entry and exit at the pit head or underground station, where workers board a moving or stationary cage on uneven platforms.

The term winding comes from the motion of rope around the drum of the winding engine; man distinguishes passenger transport from material handling. In British mining dialect, the cage itself is often called the kibble or simply the cage, while the rope is the winding rope or main rope. Shafts equipped for manwinding must be at least 1.5 metres in diameter for a single cage, larger for dual-cage systems or mixed cargo and personnel operation.

Manwinding remains essential in underground metalliferous and coal mining, and in deep geotechnical work. Automated cage systems with electric motors and electronic governors have replaced mechanical rope systems in newer mines, but the principle remains: a cage descending on a rope, controlled from the surface. Regulatory bodies impose strict testing and certification requirements for both equipment and operators, because the consequence of failure is loss of life underground.
