Brute de forge is a metal surface finish that preserves the visible marks left by forging hammers and dies. Instead of grinding, sanding, or polishing these marks away, they remain as part of the finished aesthetic. The term comes from French: brute meaning raw or rough, and forge meaning the blacksmith's workshop. This finish is deliberately kept in this state, though any sharp edges or genuine defects are still addressed.

The process leaves behind a textured surface showing the individual hammer blows or press marks from the forming process. On hand-forged work, this creates an irregular, organic pattern of overlapping impressions. On machine-forged or stamped pieces, the pattern is more uniform and repeatable. The depth and character of the texture depend on the hammer or die geometry, the number of forming blows, and the metal's grain structure. Steel, copper, bronze, and aluminum can all be finished this way.

Brute de forge appears most commonly on decorative metalwork, architectural hardware, cutlery handles, and fine hand tools. The finish serves both functional and aesthetic purposes: the texture provides grip on tool handles and reduces glare on reflective surfaces, while visually it signals craftsmanship and authenticity. Mass-produced items sometimes attempt this finish by embossing or stamping a texture into smoother metal, though this is technically distinct from true forge finishing.

The main challenge is deciding which marks to keep and which to remove. Manufacturing seams, flash, or obvious flaws must be dressed without erasing the intentional forging character. This requires skill and judgment from the finisher. Over-aggressive finishing destroys the effect; too little creates sharp edges or leaves material that catches and tears. The surface must be cleaned of scale and oxidation without losing the hammer texture itself.

Brute de forge sits at the intersection of tradition and industrial production. It became fashionable in late 19th and early 20th century craft metalwork as a reaction against perfectly smooth machine finishes. Today it appears in bespoke architectural pieces, high-end cutlery, and designer metalwork where the forging process is part of the product's story and justification for its cost.
