Buses fall into distinct categories by duty cycle and route type. City transit buses operate fixed routes with frequent stops, using air suspension and hydraulic door systems to manage the wear of constant acceleration and braking. Coach buses, built for intercity service, sacrifice door frequency for comfort: fewer stops, longer wheelbase, reclining seats, and smoother suspensions tuned for highway speed. School buses prioritize passenger safety and structural rigidity, with reinforced frames, wide-track axles, and characteristic yellow paint with reflective striping mandated by road authorities in North America.
Mechanical demands and failure modes
A bus engine must deliver high torque at low RPM and operate reliably for 500,000 to 1,000,000 kilometers. Diesel engines dominate because they meet these demands while managing fuel economy across varied terrain. The transmission is almost always a heavy-duty manual or automated unit with 6 to 12 gears; automatics are less common due to cost and maintenance complexity. Braking is a critical failure point: full air brake systems with dual circuits are standard, since hydraulic-only brakes cannot dissipate the energy of repeated stops from high mass without overheating or loss of pressure.
Corrosion and metal fatigue at the frame welds are the main structural concerns. Buses operate in wet, salty climates for years without major overhaul, so galvanizing and paint protection are essential. The wooden or composite floor and wall panels absorb moisture and require replacement; modern buses use aluminum framing and waterproof composites to extend service life. Tire wear is severe: a city bus may burn through a set of tires in 80,000 kilometers due to the combined stress of load and frequent cornering at stop lights.
The term "bus" derives from the Latin omnibus, meaning "for all," first applied to a horse-drawn carriage in 19th-century France. The motor bus emerged in the 1890s as internal combustion engines became reliable enough to replace horses. Today, buses remain a backbone of urban transport because they move 50 people in one trip instead of 50 separate cars, reducing congestion and emissions per passenger mile. They are classified by law as commercial motor vehicles, subjecting them to stricter inspection and driver licensing than private cars.
