An underride occurs when a vehicle with a lower profile, typically a car or motorcycle, slides partially or completely beneath a taller vehicle, usually a truck or trailer, during a collision. The lower vehicle enters the space under the chassis or cargo deck rather than making contact with the sides. This geometry fundamentally changes the injury and damage pattern from a conventional side-impact or head-on crash, often with catastrophic consequences for occupants of the smaller vehicle.

Underrides happen most frequently when a car strikes the rear of a stationary or slow-moving trailer, or when a vehicle swerves into the side of a truck. The car's hood and windshield may pass entirely beneath the truck bed, meaning the roof and upper cabin of the car bear the impact instead of the vehicle's designed crumple zones. At highway speeds, the results are often unsurvivable. Side underrides, where a vehicle slides under the side of a trailer, are less common but occur in angled collisions and lane-change accidents.

Regulatory response and guards

Rear underride guards (also called ICC bumpers or underride protection devices) became federally mandated on the back of trailers and semi-trucks in the United States starting in 1968, though standards have evolved. These are steel structures, typically 18 to 24 inches above the ground, designed to prevent or slow a vehicle from sliding beneath the trailer. Side underride guards remain less regulated; many trucks operate without them despite the severity of side-impact underrides. Testing standards like NHTSA's ratings and IIHS crashworthiness studies have increased focus on underride protection in recent years.

The term emerged in accident investigation and insurance work to distinguish this failure mode from conventional collision patterns. Because an underride often destroys the upper cabin structure that normally protects occupants, vehicles that would survive a frontal or side crash at the same speed may be unsurvivable in an underride. This has made underride prevention a persistent concern in trucking safety, vehicle design, and highway traffic management.
