A trailing wheel is an unpowered axle fitted beneath the rear end of a steam locomotive, positioned behind the driving wheels that transmit power from the cylinders. Its sole function is structural and dynamic: to support the weight of the firebox and boiler that overhang the chassis, and to help distribute that load across the track. On a locomotive where the driving wheels may be 5 or 6 feet in diameter, the trailing axle typically carries a smaller wheel, often 3 or 4 feet across, since it needs no traction to do its job.
The trailing wheel is classified by its truck arrangement. A locomotive with two driving axles and one trailing axle behind them is designated a 2-4-2 wheel arrangement in Whyte notation (leading, driving, trailing). Larger engines might have two trailing axles in a four-wheel truck, giving arrangements like 4-6-4 or 2-8-4. The trailing truck itself is often articulated or sprung independently so that it can move laterally through curves without binding, since it does not articulate with the driving wheels the way a leading truck might.
Why trailing wheels matter
Without a trailing wheel, the overhang of the boiler would place excessive downward force on the rear driving axle, reducing the weight available on the front driving wheels and thus limiting adhesion and pulling power. The trailing wheel transfers that overhang force to its own axle, spreading the total locomotive weight across more of the track. This improves both tractive effort and riding quality. On freight and express engines, the trailing wheel also provides a mounting surface for the ashpan that sits below the firebox, keeping hot ash and clinker away from the frame.
The trailing wheel rarely causes problems in service because it bears no driving load and therefore no torque. Wear is gradual and predictable. The chief concern is keeping the truck centered and freely moving so that it can follow curves without scrubbing the wheels sideways against the rails, which wastes fuel and wears the flanges prematurely. Derailment risk is low at the trailing end unless the track is severely deformed or the truck becomes jammed with debris.
The term "trailing" simply means it trails behind the powered wheels. It is not to be confused with a leading truck, which sits in front and often steers the locomotive into curves. Together, leading truck, driving wheels, and trailing wheel form the complete running gear of a steam locomotive, each part handling a different portion of the weight and motion that the steam engine produces.
