cager: the operator who runs the lift in a mine
A cager manages the cage, the open-frame conveyance that hauls workers and material up and down a mineshaft. In deep mines, the cage is the only practical way to move people and ore between surface and working levels, often dropping hundreds or thousands of meters. The cager sits in a small operator's cabin attached to the cage structure itself, controlling the hoist engine through signals and mechanical or electrical controls. This role demands absolute focus: a cager operates in near darkness, relies on bell signals or radio contact with banksmen on surface, and must judge cage position by sound and feel as much as by instruments.
Cagers fall into two main categories: shaft cagers, who specialize in personnel moves and emergency response, and skip operators, who handle ore-loaded skips in a mill or mine circuit. Both roles require understanding the dynamics of their specific cage weight, balance, and the load capacity that the hoist engine can safely manage. A shaft cage may carry 10 to 20 workers at a time, each adding around 100 kg, while a skip might hold 3 to 5 tons of broken rock.
Cagers and the hoist engineer
On surface stands the hoist engineer, who operates the winding engine itself. The cager and engineer work as a team through strict protocols: the cager rings or radios a code, the engineer acknowledges, and only then does the engine move. Miscommunication has caused cage accidents, so many mines use a dedicated signaling system with distinct bell patterns for each instruction: one bell for up, two for down, three to stop. Modern installations use radio, but the protocol remains the same.
The work is claustrophobic and repetitive, but errors are fatal. A cager must monitor rope condition, listen for unusual sounds from the hoist machinery, and maintain awareness of cage wear and door function. In older mines especially, a cager often works alone for long shifts, responsible for moving people in and out of the pit at the start and end of shifts: hundreds of trips per week. The position has largely mechanized in modern deep mines, where automated cage systems and safety interlocks have reduced the operator's load, but many underground operations still employ skilled cagers because human judgment in an emergency remains irreplaceable.
