Caliper: From Compass to Brake Grip
A measuring tool gave its name to the clamp that squeezes your brake pads onto the rotor.
To most people, a caliper is a precision measuring instrument: two legs hinged at one end, used to measure inside or outside dimensions. You slip one leg inside a bore, open it until it touches, and read the gap. The word comes from the Old French calibre, meaning diameter or thickness of a gun barrel.
In automotive braking, a caliper performs a very different job, though the name was borrowed for good reason. The brake caliper is the hydraulic clamp that wraps around the brake rotor (the spinning metal disc on your wheel). When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure pushes pistons inside the caliper outward, forcing the brake pads hard against both sides of the rotor. The friction brings you to a stop.
The resemblance is geometric: both tools grip something between two opposing surfaces. The measuring caliper holds a workpiece between its legs; the brake caliper holds a rotor between its pads. The metaphor was clear enough that engineers adopted the name when disc brakes became the standard in the 1960s and 1970s. A moving caliper measures by touch. A brake caliper stops motion by pressure.
The brake caliper comes in two main designs: floating and fixed. A fixed caliper has pistons on both sides of the rotor and is mounted rigidly to the suspension. A floating caliper has a piston on only one side and slides on pins or bushings, allowing the piston to pull the caliper as it extends. Both designs achieve the same result: parallel, perpendicular pressure on the rotor from opposite directions, the essence of a two-legged grip.
